Ümüt Arslan earned his master's degree in school counseling and a doctoral degree in counselor education and supervision at the University of Montana. With professional experience as a school counselor and faculty member in both Turkey and the United States. During his graduate studies, he has worked with diverse cultural groups, including Native American communities on reservations, Job Corps participants, TRIO Program students, and international students (Humphrey Program, Kumamoto Program, and Xisong Program) to foster cross-cultural engagement and support student success. He received multiple accolades, including the Outstanding Foreign Student Award, Diversity Advisory Council Student Achievement Award, Bertha Morton Scholarship, and Tough Kids Cool Counseling Scholarship and was selected as a panelist for the American Counseling Association (ACA) International Student Panel. After his graduation, he worked in Turkey 8 years. During this time, he also collaborated with and presented on migration, inclusive education, positive psychology, and youth populations in Portugal, Poland, the UK, Azerbaijan, and Italy while serving as a faculty member. His research and publications focus on ethics, social-emotional learning, solution-focused brief therapy, career counseling, mindfulness, and positive psychology. He is a co-editor of the first evidence-based Turkish Counseling Ethical Codes; the Ethical Casebook: Basic Knowledge, Cases, and Analysis; and a co-author of The Best Divorce Book. Currently, Ümüt Arslan is an Associate Professor and School Counseling Program Chair at the University of Nebraska at Kearney. These days, he is dedicated to advancing research, teaching school counseling courses, and contributing to educational and counseling initiatives especially in rural schools. If the weather is sunny, you might spot him walking between the College of Education and the G.W. Frank Museum of History and Culture or on the trail between the Kearney Country Club Golf Course and UNK. On Saturdays, you might see him enjoying with his wife and son at Yanney Park, thanks to the City of Kearney.
